The “Fixer”

By: Emily - Mindful Career Journey

Ever notice how being the "fixer" at work means you’re constantly handed the toughest problems……while someone more senior (and better paid) gets the lighter lift?

You’re the one who “just gets it done.”

  • The client’s angry?  Send it your way.

  • The team’s behind on a critical deadline?  You’ll figure it out.

  • A fire drill on a Friday at 5 PM?  Of course, you’re already on it.

Why?

Because “You’re so good at what you do.”

At first, it feels like recognition……a badge of honor.

But now?

It feels like a weight you didn’t sign up for.

You’re not imagining it.  High performers often become the default problem-solver, and while your capability is celebrated, your capacity is rarely protected.

Meanwhile, your colleague with the title, the high paycheck, clocks out at a reasonable hour and keeps their stress levels to a minimum while you get the pressure and the expectations.

The truth is: being the “fixer” is NOT the same as being valued.

If you’ve been carrying the weight of your team or department on your back…… it might be time to ask:  What would it look like to be recognized for your impact without having to carry the weight of everyone else’s responsibilities?  To be respected and supported?

You don’t have to keep proving yourself by surviving impossible standards.

If that sounds like where you are right now, how are you handling it?
